Frocktober 25th!

Today’s dress is a bit strange for me, as it’s very short and doesn’t have a defined waist!  The skirt part fluffs out from my hips so it’s not very flattering.  Nevertheless, I really love it!

Today was spent at the library, working at a computer all day.  Kind of boring!

Dress detail: I Love Milk.

This dress is from Uniqlo, Paris.  It is a collaboration between Uniqlo and Milk – a famous and long-running lolita/casual brand from Japan.

This dress comes with old worn photos too!  Me mucking about in Sweden after buying it in Paris.  We spent Christmas in Paris in 2010 and it was bizarre!  Not romantic at all!  Everything was closed and we had Christmas lunch at McDonald’s!

Should I cut my fringe like that again?

Frocktober 23rd!

Gosh it’s getting towards the end of the month!  I’ve started to wear dresses that are kind of weird and I never otherwise would wear!  Maybe I need to get rid of some…

Today’s dress is really nice, but tight around my ribs 😦 and I can’t figure out how I’d alter it because there’s piping all around the middle panel.  I managed today, so maybe I’ve lost weight or gained toughness.  Also I didn’t do anything hard today, so didn’t have to breathe too hard!

Charles commented that there’s always a cardigan photo and then some without-cardigan photos.  But seriously, I’m NEVER WITHOUT A CARDIGAN!  They really are essential, especially in this kind of warm-ish weather.

This dress also comes with an old worn photo.  This is me and my parents right before my third-year recital!  I look so young there, in 2009!
I have no idea what to wear tomorrow.  It’s getting more and more difficult…

How to make chocolates!

On Friday, Charles and I made chocolates to sell at the election on Saturday.  Since the church was to be used as a voting venue, our friends decided to have a sausage sizzle/ chocolate sale/ cake stall to raise money for charity.  Charles and I ended up in charge of making the chocolates!  We made chocolate ginger, strawberry flavoured hearts, freckles, peppermint swirl, orange swirl, and rocky road.

Ingredients:
Moulding chocolate – white, milk, and dark.
Crystallised ginger.
Hundreds and thousands (sprinkles)
Food colouring – green and orange
Food flavouring – strawberry, peppermint and orange

Tools:
Chocolate moulds – hearts, or whatever you like!
Aluminium foil
Skewers
Muffin or cupcake baking pans
Baking trays
Tupperware shallow box
Microwave

1. Ginger Chocolates
First, get your crystallised ginger and chop it up into little bits.

Melt your chocolate and put all the ginger bits into the chocolate!  Make sure they’re all coated.

Use tongs or chopsticks to get out the ginger pieces and place them on a piece of foil to set!

2. Strawberry flavoured dark chocolate hearts

First get a bowl of dark chocolate and nuke it til it’s nice and runny.
You’ll need some strawberry flavouring stuff, this is what we used.  Put a tiny bit into the chocolate and mix.  You really only need a little, this stuff is potent.

Get your moulds ready…

Pour in the chocolate!  Leave to set in the fridge.

 3. Giant freckles!

I forgot to take progress pictures but here’s what you do.  Melt some milk chocolate.  Put the chocolate into some muffin trays.  About a teaspoon of chocolate each is right.  Wait a minute til it starts to cool, then put a whole lot of sprinkles on top!
Leave to set.  When it’s cool, you can shake off the remaining sprinkles and put them aside for later.

4 and 5.  Peppermint/ Orange swirl!
First melt around 500g of dark chocolate.  Mix in a small amount of peppermint/orange oil.  Line a baking tray with foil and pour it all in.
Then melt a smaller amount of white chocolate and colour it green/orange.  Put big splodges of colour onto the dark flavoured chocolate.  Like so.

Then using a skewer, mix around the coloured chocolate to make swirls.  I like to drag the skewer across the whole tray in zigzag motions.  Charles likes swirling in a circle.  Be creative!

Leave to set!  When it’s set, peel off the foil and break it up into bite-sized pieces with your hands.

 6. Rocky Road
First melt 500g of milk chocolate.  Add a bag of mini marshmallows and half a bag of chopped peanuts!  Mix it up and pour it into a tray.  I didn’t take pictures of our progress with this one but it’s the easiest!

After all that we were tired and needed a drink.  Charles has a cute apron.

We bagged all of the chocolates and tied them with a ribbon.  And labelled them with a price.

 Two whole baskets full!

THAT’S A LOT OF CHOCOLATES

Frocktober 21st!

Today I had to work at the library.  So many people asked questions, I was up and down all day!
Also today I was a bit silly when taking photos.
Today’s dress is from Review – my favourite shop.  Now they have an online shop too!  This dress was bought specifically to go to Sweden and perform with.  So here’s a (fairly lame) photo of Charles and me after a performance!
Have a lovely week!

My beautiful budget wedding! Part 4: Reception!

1. Venue

Our reception was held at University House at ANU.  This was chosen firstly because we both attended ANU and it holds special memories for us.  Secondly, because it’s a really pretty hall and the people really know how to do weddings.  And thirdly, because the rates were reasonable.
The best thing was that they knew weddings.  The venue already had a rough running order for the evening, knew how to do place settings, had special wedding decorations, special food, and were really good at helping us with all our questions.  That was super important for the venue.  Because they knew what they were doing, we were able to relax and enjoy the evening without worrying about little things.

They allowed us to take some photos in the library, which was cute.  See the books all have little labels!
The beautiful hall.  White tablecloths and purple serviettes, all exactly as we wanted.
Another great thing about this venue was that they gave us a bridal suite for free!  So when we got tired of the party we could just head upstairs!
2. The Cake
My mum made our cake!  It was a delicious rich fruit cake.  She decorated it like a pro.  She worked really hard on it!  She even made those icing roses!

3. Bonbonniere
Some more of the stationery.  You can see the little lyrebird on the place card, which my friend designed for us.  I bought sugared almonds and little bags for everyone and typed out a note for each bag.  It’s a traditional gift, which is nice, but it’s not over the top like some of the more modern bonbonnieres.  People give out all sorts of things now that would cost a fortune.  These things probably cost me about $140 altogether, with the gauze bags and the almonds both costing around $70 each.

4. The Alcohol
A word on alcohol.  It is traditional and fun to have some champagne and drinks for these kind of important events.  Our reception venue had two options for alcohol: a package deal of $120 per person which included all drinks and food; or a consumption deal, which was the meal cost, $80pp, and then all drinks consumed.  We had to decide which one to get based on how much alcohol we thought would be consumed.  Would each person consume more than $40 worth of alcohol?  Booze is kind of expensive!  They used nice champagne and wine which was quite a lot per bottle!  But in the end we chose to pay on consumption, and we ended up paying quite a bit less than the package deal.  So that’s something to think about and ask your reception venue about.

5. The Band

We ended up hiring a local jazz trio who we knew from the School of Music.  They were super rad!  They played all the jazz standards we requested, lots of others, a bridal waltz on Just The Way You Look Tonight, and our entry music was just fantastic.  We fed them a meal and they were awesome.  They played for 4.5 hours (6 – 10:30) and we paid $1000.  That’s a really good deal, just so you know.  You wouldn’t expect that normally, except we got mates rates.
In the end our reception cost around $6000, and the band cost $1000.
Total: $7000.
Our parents split the bill and we didn’t pay this part.

So how much in total?  If you’ve been following along, you’ll notice…

Accessories: $360
Reception: $7000
Outfit: $580
Church and such: $700

Grand Total: $8640
What I paid: $1540, but that was without the reception, band, or shoes.

The total cost for our wedding was about a quarter of the cost of an “average” Australian wedding.  And I don’t think we skimped on anything at all.  Nothing felt cheap, nothing felt bad, it was a perfect day with my perfect mate.  In the end, it was all about getting married to my partner in life, but that’s the kind of wisdom that only comes after the event.  It’s fun to throw a big party though!

So did you find this interesting?  What else would you like to know about planning weddings?
