cardigan, knit

Completed – Milena cardigan!

It’s finally finished!  This cardigan took me about 6 months to finish but I finally did it!

Presenting… Milena!

I admit that I didn’t knit the entire 6 months.  I did loads of other projects in between and sometimes didn’t knit this for months at a time!  But it was pretty slow going.

I made quite a few modifications to the pattern.  I didn’t do any 1×1 ribbing (because who has time for that), I altered the back slightly to lower the neckline, I made the armholes bigger, and completely changed the sleeves.  The sleeves I knit flat, bottom-up, and increased ad lib to the armpit, then cast off ad lib for the sleeve head.  I detailed all of this in my ravelry notes.  It worked out pretty well IMHO.  The pattern was free, and only in one size, so everything was fairly lucky!

Trying to get a closeup of the lace pattern… it’s a pretty interesting one!  Mine came out a little more dense than the original, because it’s a thicker wool while the original was cotton.

Fix your collar Christina!!

There are 12 buttons on this sucker.  It takes ages to do them up, so I think I’ll wear it with every 3rd one undone, it gives a cute effect.
I accidentally was super dumb and sewed the button bands on the wrong way – so I have to do up this cardigan like a man’s cardigan.  I’ll get used to it!  You don’t really notice unless you’re a person who is picky about these things.

Overall a pretty nice cardigan!  I’m pleased this is finished, now I have a lovely deep green cardigan!

Simple knitted beanie(s) pattern!

Scroll down for the pattern!
I just finished knitting a beanie from the leftover yarn from my Miette cardigan.  I don’t know if I’d actually *wear* it with the cardigan, since it’s all a bit matchy-matchy but I love it!  I’m going to wear it a lot in winter, so comfy and warm.
But this is actually the FIFTH TIME I’ve made this pattern.  Firstly  I made a dark burgundy one for my good friend who went through chemo and needed a hat.  She loved it so much and wore it almost every day of her bald period, and I knitted her another one in white too.  She wore the white one for “good”.
The red hat before I gave it away.  Yes I’m wearing a mens flanny.
I also knitted a cream coloured one for my mum, and then a nice dark blue one for Charles!  I made Charles’ one bigger than the ladies’ ones so it was nice and comfy and roomy, and then I put a pompon on top!  And now he loves it!

So here’s the pattern!  It’s from the March 1973 edition of Stitchcraft (do they still make that?).
You’ll need some nice 8 ply (worsted weight) yarn (I used a bit less than 2 50g skeins), and some 3.25mm needles (UK size 10, or US size 3), and 4mm needles (UK size 8, or US size 6).

With the 3.25mm needles, CO 108 sts. Work 6.5 inches of k3, p3 rib, decreasing 3 sts evenly on last row: 105sts.
Change to 4mm needles and starting with a k row, work straight in stocking-stitch until hat measures 2 inches from top of ribbing.

Shape as follows:
1st row: k. 7, (k. 2 tog., k. 9) 8 times, k. 2 tog., k. 8. 96 sts.
2nd row and every alternate row: purl.
3rd row: (k. 6, k. 2 tog.) 12 times: 84 sts.
5th row: (k. 5, k. 2 tog.) 12 times: 72 sts.
7th row: (k. 4, k. 2 tog.) 12 times: 60 sts.
9th row: (k. 3, k. 2 tog.) 12 times: 48 sts.
11th row: (k. 2, k. 2 tog.) 12 times: 36 sts.
13th row: (k. 2, k. 2 tog.) 12 times: 24 sts.
15th row: (k. 2 tog.) 12 times: 12 sts.
17th row: (k. 3 tog.) 4 times: 4 sts.

Break yarn, thread through remaining sts, draw up tightly and fasten off.
To make up, press and join back seam with remaining yarn (I used a crochet hook). Fold ribbing in half to right side, or wear as desired. You can also make a pompon for extra cute.

To make Charles’ hat bigger, I cast on 12 extra stitches initially, so that at the end of the ribbing I had decreased 3 sts to 117.  Then the shaping:
1st row:  k. 9, (k. 2 tog., k 10) 8 times, k. 2 tog., k. 10. 108 sts.
3rd row: (k. 7, k. 2 tog.) 12 times: 96 sts.
5th row: as for 3rd row in above pattern.
7th row: as for 5th row.

So basically you extend the shaping by one row, but still decrease 12 sts each time.  You could make it even bigger if you wanted!  Sometimes I like to wear Charles’ hat because it’s so roomy and comfy, so you might want to just make a bigger one!

I hope this pattern is useful!  It’s honestly a really great hat!

Matchy matchy!

Miette – Finished!

I’ve finished my first big knitting project! (That is, if you don’t count the time I knitted a pair of pants).
This was the Miette pattern by Andi Satterlund.  She has some other cute things too!

I am so happy with my cardigan!  I love the colour, the fit, the length, everything!  It wasn’t super hard either.

This is my happy face when I’ve made something I like!
After the photos we went out to town and I walked around with my head held high!  I felt SO GOOD in this.

The sleeves are a tiny bit looser on me than on other people I’ve seen, but I’m cool with it.  Gives me a bit of elbow room 🙂

The front lacework.  It looks really complicated but it’s actually pretty easy to follow the pattern.

The only variation I made was shortening the sleeve slightly (by like an inch probably).  I have short arms.

Happy FACE!  Here’s a link to my Ravelry page where I wrote more detailed stuff.

cardigan, dress, earrings, OOTD, outfit, review

As promised, Modcloth package and review!

I’ve been patiently waiting for two weeks for my Modcloth package to arrive!  It finally arrived yesterday afternoon!  Exciting!
“How do you open this thing?”

The box was super cute and had writing on the inside.  One side says “So what shall we do together?” and the other says something about how we’re all unique and we should tell each other about it on the website.

Cardigan!  YES
This is the Classic Remixed Cardigan in pink.  Everyone on the website reviewed this cardigan saying it was too small.  It fit me just right!  I bought the small size, against everyone’s advice 🙂 Snug but comfy and roomy enough.  I love the sparkly silver dots.

Tights!  AWESOME!
These are the Tights for Every Occasion tights in Teal and Wine.  They have heaps of other colours too!  They’re very stretchy, soft, and comfy!

Dress!  ZOMG!
This is the Luck Be A Lady Dress in Dots.  They also have this dress in a lot of other colours.  I already have this dress in blue dots, which I adore to bits and I frocktober’d here.  I loved it so much I bought this pattern too!  Apparently they’re not stocking the blue dots one any more.  This dress fits me like a glove (well a glove that fits really well) and flatters beautifully.

Earrings!  Super rad!
These are the Bouquet Brilliance Earrings.  I just love them to bits.  All the gems are just so shiny and gorgeous.

Outfit!

The best bit about this dress – POCKETS YOU GUYS

The cardigan does up fine, no fit problems at all!

The skirt has a nice amount of flare and I already received two compliments wearing it today!

The earrings are kind of big but not heavy for their size.

Pattern close up.  Looks kind of like Aboriginal dot paintings doesn’t it? And the belt is lovely, can’t wait to wear it with other things too.

All in all I’d have to say that this is my best Modcloth order yet!  I wish their things weren’t so pricy, but  it sure is fun getting things in the mail, especially when they’re super cute and awesome!
