Completed: Colette Hawthorn

Breaking news: Christina has sewn a garment that is not only pretty, but also fits comfortably!
I present the Colette Hawthorn dress, view 3 (sleeveless)!
My fabric is a lightweight seersucker which is a vintage gift from a church friend.  She was getting rid of lots of fabric she hadn’t used in 30 years.  I only had about 2 metres!
I was so careful making this, since my last attempt at making a dress was a total disaster.  I made a toile, pressed after every step, and even made a copy of the pattern so I didn’t cut into the precious tissue.  I laundered my fabric first:
I was so careful doing all the marking.  The only issue I had was that this fabric pattern does have a right way up, and I didn’t have enough fabric to cut it all out the right way.  I had to cut the back skirt pieces upside-down, but you totally can’t notice unless you scrutinise the thing, and you’d have to look at my butt to do that.  So my issue isn’t an issue at all!
My toile worked out pretty well, a shame it was a) covered in paint, and b) completely see-through.  It had a pretty pink floral pattern, very subtle.
I was so frightened of doing the buttonholes, as I have never done them on my machine before.  They turned out pretty well!  I didn’t get them quite in the same place as on the pattern, but it was pretty darn close!  I spent a long time making sure I was putting the buttons in the right place too.
Looks cute with a belt.  I’m thinking of making a waist tie with the remaining fabric (which is scraps, I’d have to sew a lot of them together).
All these photos are with a very small petticoat which has lost most of its poof.
My only complaint about the pattern is that the armholes are way small.  I made a size 0 with no alterations and I have very slim arms.  Not slim enough!  They’re not uncomfortably tight, but I could use a slightly looser armhole so that I can, you know, reach for stuff.
The collar was kind of difficult – not the collar itself but the facing and all that bulk at the shoulder seams.  I just pressed the heck out of it to make it sit flat, but I can still feel the bulk.
My bias binding on the armholes is a cute striped one my mother in law gave me.  I love the subtle contrast!
As you can see it hangs pretty well!
So I’m thrilled with this dress.  It’s actually my first dress to work really well.  I’ve made other dresses but they’ve all sucked in one way or another.  I can’t wait to try view B (elbow length sleeves) as well!

Chiffon Blouse!

So those of you who follow me on Instagram (my username is cutiefulchristina) or Twitter (@cutiefulchrissy) may know I’ve been working on a certain chiffon *cough* masterpiece *cough*.  In this post I’ve included my Instagram progress pictures and some outfit and worn photos.  I’m really happy with this project!

I have been making New Look pattern 6107, blouse view B with neck ties. So a mixture between view A and view B.  The skirt in this pattern is also super cute.

Sewing chiffon is difficult.  Last time I sewed a chiffon blouse, I didn’t do proper seams and the whole thing frayed and came apart.  It was very embarrassing.  It was a cute blouse the one day I wore it, and then I saw my elbow poking through the sleeve and had a look, and found that it was beyond saving.
So I used french seams this time, which was kind of difficult since I’ve never done it before.  But I’m confident that it won’t fall apart this time!

Progress shot of it without sleeves, hems, or buttons.

The cute birdies on the fabric.  From far away it just looks like a spotty pattern!

I completed it last night after MUCH cutting of threads.

Outfits!

I find that this blouse goes well with my American Apparel trousers.  I couldn’t find much else that goes, in my currently small wardrobe (the rest of my stuff is at my parents’ house).

Looks good tucked in.

The back is acceptable.

It’s hard to see because of the pattern, but there are 6 pearly shank buttons and a neck tie.

Shaped nicely – good darts ‘n’ stuff.  Works untucked too!

Looks good standing on one leg.

I am super proud of myself for this blouse.  It’s going to be a blouse I actually wear!  Can’t wait to wear it with a light coloured skirt, shorts, jeans, a cardigan!  I thought it’d be see through so I bought a camisole, but it turns out it’s fine without!  The pattern is too busy to see through it.  I’m thrilled!  This means it’ll be a lovely cool summer top.  Winner!  I might use this pattern again with a different fabric in future!

Outfit of the Day and… Buttons!

First up an outfit!
This is my new circle skirt I made last weekend, in this post here!
Skirt: Handmade
Shoes: Vintage
Tights: Forever 21
Cardigan: SES
Belt: Came with another dress
Blouse: Target
Brooch: Family heirloom

This mint green cardigan received three compliments that day!

I bought these little brown shoes at a vintage fair.  They’re super comfortable to walk in, but still give me a bit of height.

This brooch was made for my grandmother by my grandpa.  It’s an old penny with a pin glued on the back, and the front decoupaged with pretty paper.  It’s one of my most special things.

Off to work in the office!

Later that night I played around with my enormous button collection.  I’m sick of hunting through them for hours trying to find matching sets, so now I’m trying to tie together all the matching ones!

 Cute little girl shank buttons.

A few of my favourites.  Those back left ones I actually covered myself with a kit.  They match a skirt.
All the paired up ones!  I just used a bit of thread to tie them together.  There’s still SO MUCH to do, I get quite overwhelmed doing it.  I must have thousands of little white buttons which are ALL DIFFERENT.  I’d like to get rid of a lot of my buttons because they’re cluttering up my life.  Any ideas on how to get rid of them?  Do people buy buttons on etsy?

Day 23

Oh look!  It’s another skirt.  I made it a while ago but never posted it, so here it is!

It’s a circle skirt!
Just look at those buttons!  Fate squeezed buttony creativity out of me by denying me a zip when I needed one.  There’s a strip of lace there to hide a little gap where you can see my hip.

I think I might be a day behind but I’m not sure.

It’s time for you to comment!
